PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

While it is unclear whether Rohit Sharma will still feature in the playing eleven as an opening batsman, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly endorsed the selectors' choice.

Rohit Sharma

The Indian cricket selectors have made a significant decision to remove Rohit Sharma from the role of captain of the national Test team. This announcement precedes the Indian team's impending series against England, scheduled to commence next month.

Role Uncertain for Sharma

While it is unclear whether Rohit Sharma will still feature in the playing eleven as an opening batsman, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly endorsed the selectors' choice. This decision was not driven by age but rather a strategic evaluation of Sharma's recent performance in Test matches.

Despite being 38, Rohit Sharma remains integral to India's plans in One-Day International (ODI) cricket, where he continues to play a pivotal role. Previously, there had been anticipation for Sharma to captain the team in the English series, particularly after his effective leadership in past tournaments like the ICC Champions Trophy.

Selectors' Process

Sources from the BCCI revealed that last month's discussions about Sharma's contribution to Test cricket were thorough, leading to this week's meeting in Mumbai to review final assessments. The final recommendation from these deliberations concluded with Sharma being relieved of the captaincy.

During an appearance on former Australian captain Michael Clarke's podcast, 'Beyond 23', Rohit Sharma had expressed his keenness to lead a bowling unit featuring stars such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj.

"The selectors are focusing on a new captain for the England tour, as Rohit's form hasn't met the expected standards for Test cricket. They are aiming to groom a young leader for future series," a BCCI source said.
