Akash Deep celebrating his wicket
India’s fast-bowling sensation Akash Deep produced the performance of a lifetime at Edgbaston, and soon after India’s record-breaking victory, he revealed a deeply personal motivation behind his heroics.
The 28-year-old dedicated his 10-wicket match haul in the 2nd Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy to his elder sister, who has been fighting cancer over the past two months.
In a post-match interview that left many emotional, Akash shared that his elder sister has been battling cancer for the past two months.
“I have not told this to anyone. My elder sister has been suffering with cancer. She is now stable, and I think she will be the happiest seeing my performance. I want to dedicate this match to her. Every time I held the ball, her face came to my mind,” Akash said with teary eyes.
The 28-year-old pacer tore through England’s batting with figures of 10 wickets in the match, including a six-wicket haul in the second innings. On a flat Birmingham pitch offering little help, his pace and precision stood out as India handed England their heaviest home defeat in the Bazball era.
Akash’s journey to this moment is forged in hardship. He once quit cricket to care for his paralysed father, later losing him and his elder brother. In 2016, he moved to West Bengal, played tennis-ball cricket to survive, and finally broke into the Bengal Ranji team.
Now, as he holds the match ball high at Edgbaston, his message is simple but powerful: “This is for you, Didi. We are all with you.”
Akash Deep’s rise is no longer just a sporting tale, it’s a beacon of resilience and love.
