Senior Congress leader and former MLA, Devendra Sharma on Monday announced his exit from the electoral politics and said he would not fight elections anymore.

Sharma’s daughter Debasmita Sharma who is a doctor by profession will fight polls in his place.

As per reports, Debasmita is interested in contesting in this Assembly Poll on a Congress ticket. She has opted for a voluntary resignation from her job and applied for a ticket to the OPCC to fight for Aul Assembly Constituency.

“I have decided not to contest elections any more. My daughter is a doctor. She is active in politics and involved with the Congress party too. So I asked her to contest polls in my place,” said Devendra Sharma.

“Most importantly, youths are increasingly coming forward to get involved in politics. And it is good for the State and our Country too,” Sharma added.

Speaking about her decision, Debasmita said, “My grandfather was a doctor. He later moved into politics and became MLA to serve the people. My father has been an MLA of Aul. I consider both of them as my idols. I have always taken inspiration from them. So treading on their path, I have decided to join politics to serve the people.”

Devendra Sharma was elected from the Aul constituency in 2014. However, he had lost in the 2019 elections.
