A scooter rider’s death after being hit by Parliamentarian and BJD leader Niranjan Bishi’s vehicle near Tamian Square under Patnagarh police limits in Bolangir district on Wednesday has kicked off a controversy with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding his arrest.

Bolangir district BJP president Sibaji Mohanty said, “The MP was on his way to attend a Sital Sasthi programme when the accident occurred. After the accident, the MP should have rushed the injured person to a nearby hospital. Far from doing this, the MP sneaked into a nearby house. A hit-and-run case should be registered against him and he should be arrested.”

“He (Niranjan Bishi) said that he hadn’t been travelling in the car when the mishap took place. He said he was at a programme at Saintala. If he was there, what was his PSO doing in the van? He is now saying so only to circumvent the issue,” Mohanty alleged.

MP Bishi couldn’t be contacted for his reactions on the BJP’s allegation.

Notably, a man, identified as Tankadhara Biswal of Inapur village in Larambha, was killed after the scooter he was riding was hit by MP Bishi’s car. Speaking to OTV, Bishi had said that he had gone to Khaprakhol the previous night to attend Sital Sasthi Yatra. The driver was returning to his village after dropping him (MP) at home when the mishap occurred and that he was not in the vehicle.
