Arranged marriages are still very much prevalent. Although things have improved in arranged marriages, many age-old practices and stereotypes are still being followed.
Pointing out one such bane, a Twitter user shared her opinion on age-shaming in arranged marriages and wrote, “Imagine being rejected by mothers of 28 and 31-yr-old men because you’re 25 and not 22. Imagine people saying no to you because you don’t look like an 18 at the age of 25.”
“Age zyada lag rahi hai larki ki. I’m so done with everyone and everything. Imagine you have to tolerate this bullshit just for your parents. I don’t even want to get married. Me letting my mental health deteriorate more by putting up with all this is my mothers and fathers Day gift for the next 50 years,” she added.
Her tweet has kind of started a debate on Twitter with 566.7k views, 6225 likes, and 403 retweets. A section of people came out in her support while a section of men pointed out how it wasn’t easy for men for arranged marriages.
“I’m so sorry you have to go through all of this. This aunty rishta culture is very toxic. 25 is nothing these people don’t deserve you in the first place. I know how it feels. You’ll find the right person son InshaAllah,” commented a user.
Another user commented, “Bruh, I got rejected by father of a 29-year-old guy because I’m 5”2 and he is 5”7. Height kam hai ladki ki and that guy was already 7 years older than me. What do desi parents think their boy is.”
However, a youth wrote, “So you or your parents can decide preference like age, height, colour, how much he earns, etc etc and they can’t have preferences? It could be their choices!”
Similarly, another youth wrote, “Woman after finding out that people also have preferences and just as women have preferences and reject men, men also have preferences too and can reject them as well.”
