Breaking boundaries in the field of education, a school in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram has introduced Iris, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) teacher. The humanoid robot teacher is the first in the state and possibly in the entire country.
Developed in collaboration with Makerlabs Edutech, it is a revolutionary step in the field of education. The AI teacher is part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project, a 2021 NITI Aayog initiative designed to boost extracurricular activities in schools.
Kerala’s KTCT Higher Secondary School, run by Kaduvayil Thangal Charitable Trust, becomes the first school to introduce the AI teacher. Surprisingly, the robot can perfectly perform all the activities like a school teacher.
Iris can answer complex questions across all subjects, provide personalized voice assistance and facilitate interactive learning experiences. It also has the potential to personalize learning, cater to different learning styles, and make education more engaging for students, especially in school.
The robot can move, interact, and answer to students’ responses. The students are so impressed that there are zero absentees in the classes. It can teach subjects from nursery to Class 12 and speaks three languages – English, Hindi and Malayalam.
The developers are also planning to expand this to over 20 languages. To top it all, Iris also can block inappropriate content like drugs and violence.

While the impact of the humanoid robot in long run is yet to be seen, it is certainly a great innovation for the future of education.
