Youth dies at de-addiction centre in Bhubaneswar, family alleges murder
A youth died under suspicious circumstances at a de-addiction centre in Bharatpur area in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening, triggering outrage and demands for a thorough probe. The deceased has been identified as Suryakant Mohapatra, a resident of Singhanathpur under Banki police station limits in Cuttack district. He had reportedly been admitted to the centre on August 29 for treatment.
On Tuesday evening, the de-addiction centre authorities informed his family that Suryakant has committed suicide and his body has been kept at a private hospital in the city. However, his relatives have alleged foul play, claiming that he may have been murdered. They have demanded an impartial investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Family members have questioned the centre’s role and sought clarity on the exact circumstances leading to his death. This is not a natural death. We strongly suspect foul play and demand justice, a relative said.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased have lodged a complaint against the officials of the centre. Questions have been raised about the training of staff of the de-addiction centres after several deaths were reported in the capital city.
