Twenty seven year old, Nihar Ranjan Mallik from Taradapada village under Jagatsinghpur Sadar Police limits was allegedly thrashed and physically tortured in police custody for three days.

Mallik has filed a written complaint in this regard with the IIC of the police station and has also sent its copies to the district SP, Odisha Police DG and the Chief Minister urging for justice.

In the complaint, Mallik who works as a collection agent in a private bank has alleged that he was picked up by the ASI of Jagatsinghpur Police Station on the night of March 4 in a loot case and was brought to the police station where he was allegedly beaten. The Police also used casteist slur against Mallik, he alleged.

Mallik further alleged that despite repeated denial of involvement in the crime, he was kept in the police custody for three days during which he was thrashed by the police multiple times.

He was only allowed to go after his family members and villagers sat on a dharna in front of the police station demanding his release from police custody.

Speaking to reporters, Mallik said, “The police threatened to beat my parents and frame me in false drug peddling cases if I do not admit to have committed the crime. My family members arranged CCTV footages from several places to show the police proving my innocence, following which they let me go.”

Mallik has demanded quick action against the police officials who allegedly thrashed him; and also demanded his two-wheeler, two helmets, mobile phone, watch and other accessories, which were allegedly taken away from him by the police, to be returned to him.

While the police denied saying anything on the record, the Jagatsinghpur SDPO said the allegations are baseless and nobody was tortured in police custody.
