Worker’s death at Paradip Port triggers outrage, family members stage sit-in in chilling cold
Tension prevailed high at Paradip Port after a worker was crushed to death under a wagon. The deceased has been identified as Satya Subrat Dalei of Nabadia village under Kujang block in Jagatsinghpur district.
According to sources, Dalei from Jagatsinghpur was employed as a contractual employee at the port. On Sunday, he suffered critical injuries in a wagon accident within the port premises. Despite receiving medical treatment, Dalei succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
Posthumously, the protestors brought Dalei’s body to the site, pushing for their demands to be met by the authorities. The scene outside Paradip Port's Gate No. 3 remained tense as demonstrators continued their sit-in protest with the body of Dalei.
Other co-workers also joined Dalei’s family and relatives in the protest and demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh and employment for a family member following his tragic death.
Worth mentioning, a contractual worker and surveyor Bholanath Swain from Dhanurbellari within Balikuda police limits was killed after a moving forklift ran him over in a similar manner on October 11, 2024.
Tension gripped the Paradip International Cargo Terminal (PCT) after his family members were allegedly made to run from one hospital to another for his body. Irate family members and fellow workers then ransacked the security office near the terminal’s main gate, leading to a standoff between the PICT officials.
