A woman member of the Child Welfare Committee was allegedly bludgeoned to death at Nilakantha Nagar under Gosaninuagaon police limits in Ganjam district. The deceased has been identified as Soudamini Rath.

According to sources, Soudamini was associated with several NGOs and worked for the welfare of kids. She was involved in many social works like working for kids affected with AIDS.

On Wednesday evening, Soudamini who had gone out for some work was returning home. The accused attacked her from behind when she was speaking to someone over the phone and bludgeoned her to death.

On being informed, Town police SDPO Rajib Lochan Panda and Gosaninuagaon IIC Smruti Prabha Pradhan rushed to the spot along with their team. The body was recovered and sent for autopsy while the cops launched a probe.

While no exact reason for the brutal murder was known immediately, it is suspected to be the fallout of previous enmity or revenge. The police have detained the driver of the deceased on suspicion, it was learnt.

“Soudamini had a training in Bhubaneswar for three days. Someone might have come to burgle her house in her absence. However, she returned last night,” informed her sister who reached the spot after the tragic incident.
