With the holy month of Shravan commencing today, people across Odisha are now looking for alternatives to prepare vegetarian meals owing to the skyrocketing price of vegetables. Many are forced to buy vegetables at such high prices.
Be it tomatoes or green chilies, the prices of almost every vegetable have skyrocketed in the past one week. The prices of vegetables vary from market to market in the state and the consumers are only praying and waiting for the prices to come down at the earliest.
It is pertinent to mention here that the price of tomatoes per kg is hovering between Rs 100 and Rs 120. Cauliflower is being sold at Rs 80 while the price of Ladyfinger has now reached Rs 50-60.
The budget of every household has now gone for a toss due to the price rise of vegetables. Not only homemakers, but the restaurant and hotels are also feeling the pinch of the price rise.
“Shravan month has just started and most people turning to a vegetarian diet. But the price rise of vegetables is certainly creating problems,” said a consumer.
A trader said that the prices of vegetables are likely to come down in the coming days. However, as adequate stock is not coming from outside, it has led to the temporary price hike of vegetables.
