Unauthorised roads facilitating illegal stone transportation from Kasia mine blocked

The Forest Department in Nayagarh district has shut down as many as two unauthorised roads facilitating the transport of stones from the Kasia mine, allegedly under the control of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Benudhar Pradhan.

The roads, purportedly used for the transportation of stones from Kasia Hill, have reportedly operated without official permission for several years. This development comes as part of efforts to address allegations against Pradhan, the mining leaseholder, concerning excessive mineral extraction. The Mining Department recently imposed a fine of Rs 24 crore in this connection.

During the previous administration led by the BJD, allegations of unauthorised mine expansion and illegal construction of roads were rampant. However, authorities often took little action.

Recent shifts in governmental oversight have heightened focus on illegal mining activities in the region. The illegal construction of roads through protected forest areas has come under increased scrutiny. The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Nayagarh has spearheaded this operation, resulting in the blockade of two access roads leading to Kasia hill.

A team from the Forest Department successfully curtailed the movement of vehicles along these routes, effectively halting unauthorised activities.

“We will undertake fencing and plantation activities in the area. Our staff have kept a strong vigil so that vehicles cannot enter the area,” said Nayagarh DFO Khyama Sarangi.

However, Pradhan has yet to publicly respond to the measures taken against his mining operations.
