One minor killed, two others injured in wall collapse in Odisha's Keonjhar

A tragic incident unfolded in Kolhabeda village under Ghasipura block of Keonjhar district on Saturday night when the wall of a mud house collapsed, killing a child and leaving two others critically injured.

The wall of Anjana Jena’s house gave way while the family was asleep. One of her children died instantly, while Anjana and her other son sustained serious injuries. Both were rushed to Anandapur Medical, where they are now reported to be in stable condition.

Officials confirmed that continuous rainfall had weakened the mud structure, leading to the collapse.

Concerns Over Unsafe Living Conditions

The tragedy has sparked questions about why the family was living in an unsafe kutcha house despite government schemes aimed at providing pucca homes to the poor.

Reports suggest that in Ghasipura, several families have received multiple allotments of pucca houses under the names of different family members, while many others, including the most vulnerable, have yet to receive even a single allotment. Such families continue to live in destitute conditions, exposed to the risk of similar accidents.

Government Response and Assurances

The Odisha government is reportedly conducting surveys to identify and extend housing benefits to families in need. However, local residents allege that the administration gives the same assurances each time a tragedy occurs, but no tangible results follow.
