At least one person died and 30 others were injured in a road accident when a tourist bus on its way to the revered Kalijai Temple veered off a bridge near Khandisi square under Ranpur block in Nayagarh district late Thursday night.

As per reports, the vehicle was carrying more than 40 passengers from Gunthuni village in Khandapada block when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to dense fog and it veered off the bridge at around 12 am.

Local residents rushed to the spot immediately and carried out rescue operations. Emergency services swiftly transported the injured to medical facilities in Ranpur and Chandpur. Those with severe injuries were later shifted to Bhubaneswar for advanced medical care.

“We were on our way to Kalijai when the driver lost control of the bus due to dense fog and it veered off the bridge. Many passengers have been severely injured in the mishap,” said an injured passenger who is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

“The driver could not know about the curved road due to the dense fog. As a result, he lost control of the vehicle and it fell off the bridge by hitting its side wall,” said another injured passenger.

On January 10, another tragic road mishap was reported from Telangana when a bus from Odisha met with an accident killing at least four Odia labourers.

Among the four deceased were two women who lost their lives after the private travel bus they were travelling in collided with a stationary lorry on the Suryapet-Khammam National Highway at Ilapuram in Chivemla Mandal, Suryapet district, on Friday.
