Eco-friendly cold storage for farmers
An innovative product – the Sabji Kothi, a compact organic refrigerator designed to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for up to 20 days, drew notable interest on Thursday at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention, an event celebrating the Indian Diaspora.
Developed by the Delhi-based company Saptkrishi, this technology presents a significant advantage for Indian farmers.
Sabji Kothi stands out for its ability to operate on multiple power sources, including battery, solar energy, or conventional electricity. This flexibility ensures that it can adapt to various conditions, particularly in regions with limited or unstable power supply.
Additionally, it is designed to consume minimal energy, making it an economically viable option for rural areas with restricted access to electricity.
“Sabji Kothi has been specifically developed for the Indian farmers who grow vegetables. Mostly, vegetables perish after a few days unless preserved in a cold store. The product is different from that of a fridge,” a spokesperson of the company stated.
“The Sabji Kothi uses water and runs on solar power. It also has provision for battery and electricity. The product has a capacity of around 200 kilograms. Both fruits and vegetables can be preserved in this,” the company representative said.
“The product costs Rs 15,500 and consumes power of about 20 watts in a day. The power consumption is as much as that of a mobile phone. Fruits and vegetables can be stored for more than 20 days. Unlike a refrigerator, one has to make use of water to keep the produce fresh and fine,” the spokesperson said.
Notably, Sabji Kothi needs one to one and a half litres of water every day to function properly.
