In a major push toward healthcare and education infrastructure, the Odisha government has announced plans to establish a government medical college and a public university in Bhadrak. The announcement comes amid a wave of development projects worth over Rs 6,500 crore aimed at transforming the district into an industrial and educational hub.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the declaration on Monday while launching 13 new projects worth Rs 275 crore in the district. He confirmed that the foundation stone for the Medical College and Hospital will be laid soon, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the region’s residents.
In addition to the education and health initiatives, the state has cleared two major industrial projects in Bhadrak.
These include a technical textile complex by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) with an investment of Rs 4,377 crore, and a polyester yarn production facility by MCPI Pvt. Ltd. at Rs 2,223.25 crore. Together, these projects are expected to generate over 5,400 direct jobs.
The Chief Minister highlighted Bhadrak’s strategic importance in Odisha’s industrial roadmap, citing rapid approvals of industrial projects worth over Rs 80,000 crore in just 120 days and additional approvals of Rs 1.65 lakh crore on a single day (May 22) across the state.
The proposed medical college and public university are central to Bhadrak’s development strategy. While the college will address gaps in healthcare access and medical education, the university is expected to boost higher education prospects for local youth, potentially reducing migration to urban centres.
Other projects launched include upgrades to the district hospital, road development, community health centres, sports facilities, and libraries, as well as a memorial park dedicated to Dr Harekrushna Mahatab. The government has also announced the beautification of all martyr memorials in the district.
