Hirakud Dam
In a significant development, security arrangements at the Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur have been intensified. Beginning today, authorities have restricted the entry of tourists to the dam premises until further notice. The decision has been taken as a preventive security measure amid increasing concerns over the protection of key national assets.
The Sambalpur district administration, in coordination with state and central security agencies, has initiated a high-level security protocol at the Hirakud Dam, which is Asia’s longest earthen dam and a vital water reservoir for irrigation, power generation, and flood control. As part of the upgraded measures, modern weapons, including Light Machine Guns (LMGs), have been deployed for surveillance and rapid response.’
Security personnel stationed at the dam site are now equipped with advanced arms and monitoring equipment. According to official sources, these arrangements are designed to deter any potential threat and enhance preparedness against sabotage, intrusion, or other unlawful activities. The deployment of LMGs and high-caliber rifles marks a significant escalation in security posture at the site.
Tourists, who frequently visit the dam for its panoramic views and historical significance, have been requested to cooperate with the new guidelines. Notices have been issued at key entry points, and police personnel have been stationed to ensure the enforcement of the restriction order.
“The decision to close the dam to visitors has been taken purely in the interest of public safety and national security,” a senior official said.
While the administration has not cited any specific threat intelligence behind the move, the timing of the action coincides with broader nationwide efforts to secure vital infrastructure in the wake of heightened regional tensions and emerging security challenges.
Local residents have also demanded for deployment of air-defence system and other mechanisms as well. Authorities have clarified that the restriction is temporary and will be reviewed periodically based on the security situation. Meanwhile, the public is advised to avoid attempting to enter restricted zones and to follow all official guidelines.
The Hirakud Dam, constructed across the Mahanadi River, plays a crucial role in Odisha’s economy and water management systems. As such, its protection is considered a top priority by both the state and central governments. The police and security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, and any further updates will be communicated through official channels.
