The murder on Ring Road in Sambalpur may not be related to the violence and group clash during Hanuman Jayanti on Friday, clarified district Collector, Ananya Das on Saturday.

Speaking to OTV, Das said, “Some of the accused in the Hanuman Jayanti violence involved in group clash and arson have been apprehended. But the murder at Ring Road may not be related to the violence.”

“The murder occurred on the outer Ring Road of Sambalpur is an isolated area and it was far away from the Hanuman Jayanti processions inside the city. It seems like a brawl between some individuals. The majority of the police deployment was near the processions and puja committees. The outer Ring Road only had two patrolling parties last evening,” said Sambalpur SP, B Gangadhar.

“It is practically not possible to cover every area of the city. However, there were 25 police parties patrolling the city last evening,” Gangadhar added.

One person was detained by the police in this connection. More details will be revealed after a thorough investigation, the police said.

A youth was allegedly hacked to death in an attack by a group of miscreants near Ring Road Mangala Temple in Sambalpur on Friday evening.

While the identity of the deceased has not been ascertained, an eyewitness said, “There were around 14 to 15 people who had swords and hockey sticks in their hands. The attackers first hurled bricks at them. When they fell down from the bike, the attackers hacked one person to death with swords. Another person lost his fingers in the attack.”
