Amid the growing suspense over the reopening of schools in Odisha, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond today reiterated that the final call lies with the District Collectors in view of the prevailing weather conditions in their respective districts.

While the schools were earlier scheduled to reopen on June 18, they were extended after requests from OSSTA and parents’ associations. However, with the hot and humid conditions still persisting in some parts of the state, Collectors have been directed to take the final decision taking the weather conditions in their respective districts into consideration.

In districts with favourable weather, the schools would be reopened for morning classes from 6:30 am to 10:30 am.

“We had directed the District Collectors to commence morning schools in districts that are likely to receive rainfall and have favourable weather conditions. In districts, that are still reeling under heat, Collectors were given the authority to take necessary decisions taking into consideration the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions,” informed Minister Gond.

He added, “We are yet to take any decision regarding reopening of schools. No concrete decision has been taken in this regard. The final announcement will be made after the decision.”

Worth mentioning, Balasore and Kendrapara have reopened schools from June 19 for morning classes while Ganjam, Bhadrak, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Sonepur, and Sambalpur districts have announced reopening on June 21.

Similarly, schools in Naygarh and Mayurbhanj will function for morning classes from June 20 to 22. Similarly, collectors of Khordha, Cuttack, Deogarh, Jagatsinghpur, Angul and Puri had decided to allow schools to reopen and run from 6:30 am to 10:30 am till June 20.
