Ravenshaw University students stage protest over ‘attack by outsiders, police inaction’
Tension erupted at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack as hostel students staged a protest against the alleged entry of outsiders into the campus. The protest, which began last night, continues outside the Vice Chancellor's office, with students of the West Hostel staging a sit-in demonstration on Thursday.
According to the protesting students, a group of outsiders entered the hostel premises and allegedly assaulted some students. They also claimed that the police failed to take timely action despite being informed about the incident and did not lodge FIR.
On the other hand, the agitating students alleged that instead of taking action against the intruders, the police have registered cases against some hostel students based on complaints from outsiders.
“Some outsiders entered our university premises on March 31, during the annual function. I got to know that they are from Hindu Sena. They abused me. Even though I approached the police, no action was taken. My FIR was not lodged. Later on April 1, around 12 outsiders thrashed my two friends. Those who were abused, cases were registered against them only. We are framed in fake cases. We will continue our protest until fake cases are withdrawn against us and necessary action should be taken against the outsiders,” said a student.
“Many outsiders are roaming in our university premises. They are abusing and assaulting us. Despite, repeated complaints, the university authorities are not taking any significant measures. Even though we are protesting for hours, none of the administrative officials have met us,” alleged another student.
As the protest intensifies, neither the university administration nor the police have issued an official statement regarding the matter. The students have demanded immediate action against the intruders and assurance of their safety within the hostel premises.
