In an unfortunate incident, a Plus 2 student of a private college allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Jarka in Jajpur district on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Ashis Kumar Panda, who was a resident of Odiso village under Rasulpur block in the district.

As per sources, the college authorities had asked Ashis’s parents to take him home as he was allegedly creating disturbances in the college. Subsequently, his parents took him home. However, after reaching home, Ashis consumed poison. He was immediately rushed to Madhuban Community Health Center in a critical condition. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated. However, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Following the development, the deceased’s family members alleged that Ashis committed suicide due to the mental pressure exerted on him by the college authorities.

“Ashis was given punishment by the college authorities. However, he was saying that he had not created any disturbances and wanted to check CCTV footage. When we brought him home, he committed suicide,” said Banka Bihari Panda, the deceased’s father.

“Our son committed suicide due to the mental pressure exerted by the college authorities on him. A conspiracy was hatched against him to prove that he was creating indiscipline in the college,” said the deceased’s mother Sujata Panda.

However, the college authorities refuted the allegations against them.

“We called the guardians of the Ashis and asked them to take him home as he was talking with somebody over the phone and there was a chance that other students would get disturbed by him. No discussion was made about stealing of money,” said Bibhuti Bhusan Rout, secretary of the college.
