A school at Jharigaon
Though schools across Odisha opened on Friday after the Durga Puja vacation, academic activities could not be started in many schools of Nabarangpur district.
As per reports, students in many schools of Jharigaon and Umerkote blocks didn’t go to their schools as they were prevented by their guardians who have been throwing their support behind district-based appointment of teachers.
Notably, aspirants have been staging protests in undivided Koraput district for the last few days demanding district-based appointment of teachers. The Milita Kriyanusthana Committee had called for a non-cooperation meeting in this regard on Thursday.
After Durga puja vacation, students didn’t go to most of the schools in Nabarangpur district following the call. Though teachers were present in schools, academic activities could not be started due to the absence of the students in those institutions.
As per reports, teachers of those schools tried to convince the guardians of the students to send them to schools by making door-to-door visits, but in vain.
“Our children will not get jobs after completing their studies. What is the need to read in schools? We will not cooperate and send our children to schools. Our children will no longer read in schools and undertake farming activities,” said Jag Bhatra, a guardian from Jharigaon.
“Our area, language and culture will develop if district-based appointment of teachers will be made. We will continue our protest till our demands are met. The guardians are also throwing their support behind us,” said Birsingh Majhi,” a member of Milita Kriyanusthana Committee.
“There are 262 students in our school. Unfortunately, not a single student turned up today. Though we met the guardians and the students, they refused to come to schools,” said G Mohan Rao Acharee, Headmaster of Kanakot School in Jharigaon block.
