What Data Reveals?

According to the data, during the financial year 2023-24, a total of 1,150 individuals succumbed to snakebites in Odisha. Among them, 1,022 affected families received ex-gratia compensation from the government. The district of Balasore recorded the highest number of snakebite fatalities during this period, followed by Cuttack and Ganjam.

The situation remains concerning in the ongoing financial year 2024-25, with 709 deaths reported so far due to snakebites. The government has provided financial assistance to the families of 435 victims. Unlike the previous year, Cuttack has now emerged as the district with the highest number of snakebite deaths, followed closely by Ganjam and Keonjhar.

The rising number of snakebite-related fatalities has raised concerns among lawmakers and the public alike.

Experts have emphasized the need for effective awareness campaigns, timely medical intervention, and better-equipped healthcare facilities in rural areas to address this growing issue. Additionally, environmental changes and habitat destruction have contributed to increased human-snake conflicts, necessitating a comprehensive approach to mitigate the risks.

The Odisha government has assured that necessary steps will be taken to reduce snakebite incidents and ensure that affected families receive adequate support. Further discussions on implementing improved safety measures and medical preparedness are expected in the Odisha  Assembly in the coming sessions.
