Orissa High Court
The Orissa High Court on Thursday directed the Odisha government to take firm steps to prevent cow slaughter.
During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Court directed the authorities to enforce stringent measures to curb such incidents. The Court also ordered strict implementation of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1960.
The PIL was filed by the organization Gojnyan, highlighting some incidents of cow slaughter in Cuttack. The petitioner brought these incidents to the court’s attention, prompting the directive for stricter enforcement of existing laws.
"We had observed cow slaughter incidents in Cuttack. Subsequently, we filed a Public Interest Litigation in the court in connection with the incidents. Hearing the PIL, the court said that earlier, CMC was told to take action on cow slaughters and CMC has also taken some action. The court directed the State government to take firm steps to prevent cow slaughter," said petitioner's lawyer, Piyush Panda.
