The last rites of persons, whose family members are coming forward to donate their vital organs and save the lives of other persons, will be held with full state honours. The announcement was made by the Odisha government on Thursday to create awareness in the society and encourage people to save others’ lives by donating organs.
The relatives of a brain-dead patient play a crucial role in organ donation. Their decision to donate their patients’ vital organs helps save several patients waiting for a donor of a vital organ.
It is pertinent to mention here that the state government set up the State Organ & Tissues Transplant Organization (SOTTO) to make the process of organ donation simpler.

To encourage organ donation, while the next of kin of donors are getting Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, the Chief Minister felicitates them on August 13, the World Organ Donation Day.
The state government has also been giving away ‘Suraj Puraskar’ to encourage organ donation.
The award is named after Suraj, a resident of the Bhanjanagar area in Ganjam district, who met with an accident and was announced as brain-dead. Thereafter, his family members took the decision to donate his vital organs. The harvested vital organs saved six lives.
