Odisha swelters under searing heat wave; mercury surpasses 44°C by 2.30 PM

Odisha battles a severe heatwave with temperatures surpassing 44°C, Jharsuguda at 44.8°C by 2.30 PM, affecting daily life and activities. High humidity worsens conditions; IMD predicts rising temperatures and issues warnings in the State for next few days.

Odisha has been reeling under an intense heat, with day temperatures soaring above 44°C across several parts of the State on Monday. By 2.30 PM, Jharsuguda recorded a scorching 44.8°C, noting the highest temperature among different places.

Other places also faced extreme heat, with Sambalpur reaching 42.6°C, Hirakud at 41.8°C, and Rourkela hitting 41.2°C. Coastal regions such as Keonjhar saw 37.8°C, while Chandbali recorded 37.6°C, Balasore 36.2°C, and Bhubaneswar 35.2°C.

High humidity levels along the coast added to the discomfort of residents. At 2.30 PM, places like Puri and Gopalpur reported humidity at around 72%, Paradip was nearly 70%, while both Balasore and Bhubaneswar measured close to 62%. Chandbali was slightly lower at about 59%, official sources informed.

These conditions have heightened the heat perceivably, affecting daily life and activities.

In its mid-day bulletin, India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre mentioned, “Maximum (day) temperature is very likely to rise by 3-5°C during the next three days and no major change thereafter over the districts of Odisha. Maximum temperature is likely to be above 42°C over the districts of Angul, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Boudh, Bargarh, Kalahandi, and Nuapada.”

Warnings and forecasts for the next two days

For Monday (Valid up to 0830 hrs IST of 22.04.2025)

Light rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, and Malkangiri.

For Tuesday (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 22.04.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 23.04.2025)

Light rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur and dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur.
