CM Mohan Majhi
Odisha has reported a staggering 37,611 incidents of crimes against women between June 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared these figures in the State Assembly on Monday while responding to a question raised by senior legislator Arun Sahoo.
The Chief Minister said that offences related to molestation and abduction formed the largest share of such crimes. Together, these two categories accounted for 17,408 cases, which is nearly half (46.3%) of the total recorded crimes during this period.
According to the data, molestation cases stood at 9,181, while 8,227 cases involved the kidnapping or abduction of women. Other major categories included non-dowry-related torture (6,134 cases) and dowry-related torture (5,464 cases). The State also recorded 2,933 rape cases, 2,161 incidents of public disrobing of women, and 1,278 complaints of sexual harassment.
Lesser but still concerning categories included 702 cases of eve-teasing, 447 stalking cases, and 334 cases where refusal to marry after sexual relations was reported. The Assembly was also informed about 264 dowry-related homicides, 44 dowry-linked suicides, and 174 attempts to commit rape.
Additionally, the crime records included three acid attack cases and two attempted acid attacks, as well as one offence categorised as ‘sexual intercourse not amounting to rape’.
Slamming the government, BJD leader Arun Sahoo stated, “In just 14 months, 37,611 cases of atrocities against women have taken place. This clearly shows that women are not safe here. We strongly condemn this. Women today cannot even step out of their homes freely. The government should feel ashamed. Therefore, the government must resign immediately.”
No response to Arun Sahoo’s comments was received from the ruling BJP leaders.
