The seized SUV
A routine vehicle checking turned tragic late last night when an SUV rammed into a police checkpost, leaving a Sub-Inspector critically injured. The incident took place at Dasamail Lebadi Chhak under Sohela police limits in Bargarh district.
The injured officer has been identified as Amit Dhal, Sub-Inspector of Sohela police station.
According to sources, Dhal was on duty when the speeding SUV struck him during the inspection drive. He sustained deep injuries to his waist and thigh. Following the collision, he was rushed to a private hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.
Eyewitnesses reported that the SI was standing in front of the checkpost and guiding vehicles towards the police stationed there for a routine inspection. The SUV driver allegedly failed to control his speeding vehicle and rammed into Dhal, throwing him several feet into the air.
Fellow personnel rushed to assist Dhal, during which the SUV driver fled the scene immediately, abandoning the vehicle.
Police subsequently seized the four-wheeler and initiated a search operation to trace the absconding driver. Authorities are also trying to ascertain whether the incident was intentional or an accident.

Senior officials said the matter is under detailed investigation. They stated that all angles, including whether this was a deliberate act against the officer or a case of reckless driving, were being probed and that CCTV footage from nearby areas was being collected.
As of the last reports, SI Dhal remains in a critical condition, and the accused driver has yet to be arrested.
