The Odisha Police has imposed a complete ban on the collection of ‘illegal’ chanda (donations) during the upcoming festive season, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.

Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania issued the directive to all district Superintendents of Police (SPs) after a high-level review meeting at the State Police Headquarters on Friday.

Ban on Forced Donations

Reports cited the DGP, who said that every year, instances of individuals or groups collecting unauthorised donations in the name of Puja celebrations are reported, often leading to public harassment and law-and-order issues. To curb such practices, this year, the Odisha Police has categorically barred all forms of chanda collection. SPs have been asked to enforce the directive at the grassroots level and ensure strict compliance.

Focus on Safety and Security

The meeting prioritised public safety during the festive season, with instructions for intensified patrolling, surprise checks, and deployment of additional police forces in sensitive areas. Khurania directed officers to keep habitual offenders under watch and install CCTV surveillance at key locations to prevent untoward incidents.

The top cop also stressed the need for intelligence gathering, close coordination with Puja committees, and maintaining active communication with local community leaders. Special vigilance has been ordered during idol immersion (bisarjan) ceremonies, where large gatherings are expected.

Monitoring Rumours and Social Media

The DGP instructed senior officers to immediately identify and act upon any attempt to spread rumours or create confusion online, added reports..

The DGP also directed district police units to remain on high alert and prepared to respond swiftly to any untoward situation. Coordination meetings with different community groups and Puja organisers will be held to ensure the smooth conduct of festivities.

The police have assured that elaborate security arrangements will be in place across Odisha to ensure that celebrations proceed peacefully and without public inconvenience.
