Body of the nurse Krishna Sahu aka Beena
A tragic incident in Odisha's Bolangir district raised alarm over dowry-related violence, after the death of a nurse, identified as Beena, also known as Krishna Sahu. The woman’s family alleged on Friday that Beena was killed by her in-laws over persistent dowry demands.
Beena's husband, Alok Sahu, has been taken into police custody for questioning. The couple married in 2022 and lived in Nehanabandha village. Beena had been working at Padampur hospital in Bargarh, and she left behind a young child.
According to sources, Beena faced physical and mental harassment over dowry, with specific demands including a car and an air conditioning unit. On the day of her death, she reportedly sent a video message to her mother, describing an assault by her husband and in-laws.
Her parents were en route to Nehanabandha when they were informed of her demise at Patnagarh hospital. While Alok has reportedly claimed that Beena died by suicide, physical marks on her body have led her family to suspect that she was murdered.
“My husband (Alok Sahu) is beating me. My mother-in-law is also beating me by telling to my husband. My sister-in-law (wife of husband’s elder brother) and others have united and are doing this to me. I have a young child,” Beena had said in a video before her death.
“They (in-laws) are telling me ‘you die’. We do not mind going to jail. We will come out after two to three months. They have severely beaten me,” the victim woman had stated.
Local authorities have launched an investigation, and scientific teams are examining the scene for evidence. The case has once again highlighted the serious issue of dowry-related violence in the region.
“Thakur Sahu from Gaisilet locality has lodged an FIR alleging the death of his daughter due to dowry torture. A case (No-117/2025) has been registered in this connection at Patnagarh police station. An inquest of the woman’s body was conducted today in the presence of the local Magistrate and a scientific team,” Patnagarh SDPO Sadananda Pujari said.
“The husband of the woman has been detained and is being questioned,” the SDPO added.
