The Odisha government has issued a notification allowing changes in administrative boundaries across the state ahead of the upcoming Census 2027.

The order, released by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, states that boundaries of districts, sub-divisions, tahasils, revenue villages, and urban local bodies may be altered where required.

As per the notification, such modifications can be carried out for boundaries fixed under any law in force on or before December 31, 2025.

However, once the timeline ends, the boundaries of all administrative units will remain frozen from January 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, in line with the preparations for Census 2027.

This provision effectively opens the door for creating or restructuring new districts, blocks, and panchayats before the deadline. The notification has also directed officials to ensure that the boundary determination process is completed within the stipulated period.

The order further highlights that the freezing of boundaries is a mandatory exercise before every Census to maintain uniformity in data collection. The new guidelines will apply to all administrative units in the state without exception.
