Odisha government car catches fire in Bhubaneswar, close shave for occupants

A government car in Bhubaneswar caught fire near Kalpana Square. The Registrar and driver escaped unhurt. Fire services controlled the blaze on NH-16, raising questions about vehicle maintenance.

An Odisha government car registered under the Registrar of the State Government's Information Commission caught fire while moving down the road on Thursday afternoon near Kalpana Square in Bhubaneswar.

Fortunately, while the registrar and his driver were inside the vehicle, they managed to have a narrow escape.

The unprecedented incident took place as sudden flames engulfed the vehicle near Kalpana Panthnivas while it was plying down NH-16 along the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack section.

Sources reported that fire department personnel arrived at the spot and swiftly brought the flames under control averting any major tragedy.

The vehicle was subsequently lifted to one side of the road with extensive burn and charred sections visible around its bonnet and right wheel sections.

Till the last reports came in, the fire department was reported to be conducting an inquiry into the exact nature and circumstances that led to the fire outbreak. No comments have been obtained as of yet.

The incident raised many questions over the condition of vehicles registered under different departments of the state government. Reports indicated that the car was several years old based on the time that particular model was manufactured.
