Roadblock after truck rams into auto-rickshaw in Bhubaneswar’s Jayadev Vihar

A pick-up truck collided with an auto-rickshaw in Bhubaneswar on Monday afternoon causing critical injuries to the victim and a passerby.

The incident took place on a busy stretch of the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road at Omfed Square. As per reports, the truck, belonging to Omfed crashed into the rickshaw, following which it overturned. The driver sustained serious injuries while one passenger was also injured. 

Ground reports mentioned that the truck was traveling at a speed of about 60 km/hr. At one point of the stretch, the auto-rickshaw suddenly veered in front of it. Unable to reduce his speed, the truck driver rammed into the auto-rickshaw from behind.

The severely injured auto driver was rushed to a nursing home for immediate treatment and his condition is now stated to be stable.

However, following the accident, tensions flared on the road. Locals blocked oncoming traffic and demanded the truck driver to step outside his vehicle. Police arrived at the scene and took stock of the situation.

Police pacified the agitators and took note of eyewitness accounts, remanding the truck driver to a nearby police station for interrogation.

The incident caused a temporary halt in traffic on this busy route, leading to significant congestion and a heavy traffic jam for some time. Additionally, several protestors tried to break open the truck's door to drag its driver out. Yet, with police intervention, the situation was cleared up.

Investigation is underway with a case registered at Maitree Vihar Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
