Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, asserts that his state is poised to become the leading force in India’s steel industry. Speaking at the 'Steel India 2025' conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of Steel and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Majhi emphasised Odisha’s conducive atmosphere for investors.

“Odisha will soon lead the country in the steel sector. Among the top five economically advancing states, we are establishing ourselves as an economic force,” Majhi told reporters. He reinforced the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has described Odisha as a pivotal growth engine for a developed India by 2047.

Steel to Power Odisha's Future

Majhi highlighted steel as the cornerstone of Odisha’s economy, noting the state’s significant contribution to national steel production.

"Currently, we are producing more than 41 million tonnes of steel. Our goal is to achieve 130 million tonnes by 2030,” he stated. By this timeline, he predicts Odisha will account for approximately 50 per cent of India's total steel output.

Investment and Job Creation

The mineral-rich state attracted investment proposals worth Rs 17 lakh crore at the Utkarsh Odisha business conclave in January, a significant portion of which is aimed at steel production. This surge in investment is anticipated to generate 900,000 jobs within the state.

Majhi credited this growth to the double-engine sarkar, where unified state and central leadership foster development. He outlined infrastructure improvements, such as road, port, and rail enhancements, integral to supporting industrial expansion.

“We have introduced a new industrial policy providing financial incentives that are clearer and simpler compared to those in other states,” he concluded.
