Odisha EOW arrests close aide of BJD leader Raja Chakra amid ongoing probe into transport scam

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch arrested Sushant Samal, a close associate of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Soumyashankar Chakra, popularly known as Raja Chakra, on Thursday in connection with the transport scam.

Sources reported that Samal is alleged to have assisted Chakra in concealing substantial sums of money across various locations. Investigations revealed Samal's involvement in investing in benami (anonymous) properties and engaging in money laundering activities, leading to his arrest.

Reports also added that Samal is expected to be produced in court today, with the EOW likely to seek his remand for further interrogation.

Background: The Multi-Crore Transport Scam:

The arrest of Samal follows the earlier detention of Raja Chakra, who was taken into custody on March 14 in connection with a multi-crore transport scam and mining irregularities in the Keonjhar district.

The allegations involve large-scale irregularities in the mining and loading of iron ore, with accusations of overcharging and illicit profit-sharing among key stakeholders in a scam estimated to involve around Rs 500 crore. 

EOW's Ongoing Investigation:

The EOW's investigation has intensified, leading to authorities seizing 42 vehicles and two screening plants linked to Chakra. Additionally, several bank accounts have been frozen, with approximately Rs 25 lakh immobilized as part of the financial investigation.

Political Repercussions and Government's Stance:

The scandal has garnered significant public attention, prompting responses from political figures. Odisha's Law Minister, Prithviraj Harichandan, acknowledged that several high-profile individuals are linked to Chakra.

The Minister assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that no one involved in the scam will be spared.
