Following the tragic death of a girl student from Balasore district's Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, the Odisha Crime Branch took charge of the probe on Wednesday. Senior officers, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Iman Kalyan Nayak and Inspector Panchali Rout, will lead and assist the probe, respectively.
According to sources, in a significant development in the death case of the girl student from Fakir Mohan (FM) College in Balasore, the Crime Branch of Odisha Police has taken over the investigation. The decision was made amid growing public pressure and calls for a thorough and impartial inquiry.
Crime Branch DGP Vinaytosh Mishra has entrusted the probe to DSP Nayak. She, known for handling sensitive cases, will be the chief investigating officer (CIO). She will be supported by Inspector Rout, who has also been directed to extend full cooperation.
“I assume full control over the probe of Balasore district, Sahadevkhunta PS case No. 229 dt. 12.07.2025, u/s 75(1)(iii)/78/79/351(2)/108/3(5) BNS and depute DSP, Iman Kalyan Nayak of CAW & CW, Bhubaneswar to take up the probe of the case and such other cases registered in that connection. DSP Nayak will have the powers to function as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Sahadevkhunta PS for the purpose of investigation of this case in accordance with Rule 431 (C) of Odisha Police Manual Rules,” a Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW & CW) office order issued by the Crime Branch DGP in this regard mentioned.
“This refers to CAW & CW PS case No- 05/2025 u/s 75(1)(iii)/78/ 79/351(2)/ 108/3(5) BNS. Inspector Panchali Rout will assist the I.O in the probe of the case,” the order read.
The case has attracted state-wide attention, and with the Crime Branch now involved, the focus will be on uncovering the exact cause and circumstances behind the girl student’s untimely demise. Sources indicate that the Crime Branch will revisit earlier evidence and re-examine witnesses as part of the investigation.
Alleged involvement of senior officials of the college signals the gravity of the case and the State government’s intent to ensure a transparent probe.
Meanwhile, public and student groups continue to demand justice for the deceased.
