Odisha couple buys bike by selling 9-day-old baby for Rs 60,000!

A couple from Basta area in Balasore district allegedly sold their nine-day-old baby boy to a childless couple from Sainkula village at Udala in Mayurbhanj district for Rs 60,000 and used a part of the money to purchase a bike.

However, the couple refuted the allegations and said they had donated the child to the couple from Udala as they were unable to raise the baby boy due to acute poverty.

Acting on a tip-off about the illegal act, a joint team of police and Child Welfare Committee went to Udala and rescued the child on Saturday.

“Acting on a tip-off about the sale of the child, we along with police traced the couple who had bought the baby. Subsequently, the newborn was rescued. The baby is safe and in our custody now,” said Manmohan Pradhan, a member of CWC.

Meanwhile, the couple who bought the baby, along with their relatives, confessed to having the baby without paying a single penny, sources informed adding that, the biological parents of the said infant too claimed they had not sold the child for monetary gain and not taken a single penny from the buyers.

However, as per allegations, the said infant's couple had sold the baby boy for Rs 60,000 and the father allegedly used part of the money to purchase a motorcycle. The CWC has summoned both the selling and buying families for further investigation into the matter.

Refuting the allegations of child sale, Santi Patra, mother of the infant, said, “I delivered a baby boy but I am unable to raise the child. So I donated him to a childless couple. I had not sold my baby.”
