Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi during the high-level meeting
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi issued directives for the creation and subsequent recruitment of 2,000 traffic police personnel during a high-level meeting on the law and order situation in the state at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
Discussions during the meeting revealed that at present, 2,198 traffic officers are active across several districts of Odisha. However, keeping in view the state’s growing population and transport infrastructure, the creation of 2,000 traffic police officer posts was announced and deemed necessary.
Further, the CM discussed various issues pertaining to the police department and focused on reducing road accidents, combating cybercrimes, and eradicating cannabis cultivation. During the talks, concerned officials were instructed to establish 20 new cyber police stations across the state.
As of now, Odisha only has 14 operational cyber police stations which deal with the 2,633 cybercrime cases registered in Odisha. Thus, the CM mandated directives to ensure that every station remains fully equipped and operational to handle cases.
In a bid to curb cases of crime and lawlessness, especially in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, CM Majhi instructed Odisha Police to intensify night patrolling and step up vigilance in key areas.
Finally, police were also instructed to adopt stringent measures against the cultivation and transportation of cannabis in the state. Notably, recent crackdowns under the ‘Green Clean’ initiative of the state government have proven to be intense towards making Odisha cannabis cultivation-free by 2026.
In a note of thanks, the CM also praised the Odisha Police for their commitment to safety during recent significant events such as disaster management, the DG and IG conference, Navy Day celebrations in Puri, and the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar.
Chaired by CM Majhi, the meeting involved the presence of Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Director General of Police YB Khurania, Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department, Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, Nikunj Bihari Dhal, and senior officials of the state police.
