Debjharan Waterfall
In a major boost to Sambalpur’s tourism, the picturesque Bhima Mandali and the breathtaking Debjharan have got the tag of tourist destinations of Odisha. Both the picturesque locations have been accorded official tourism destination status.
“Bhima Mandali and Debjharan are now part of the list of tourist destinations of Odisha. From now on, budgetary provisions will be made for these two destinations. Eventually, the places will be developed to draw more tourists in the coming days,” informed District Tourist Officer RK Dalei.
Bhima Mandalia, the Hidden Gem of Odisha:
Bhima Mandali, located in the Sambalpur district of Odisha and nestled in the Lendimal Reserve Forest, is home to natural caves adorned with rock paintings and stone inscriptions believed to be over 20,000 years old. The area is steeped in mythology, with locals believing that the Pandavas stayed here during their exile.
The site's name is derived from the legend of Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, who allegedly built a dam on the nearby Champali River. Archaeological surveys, including one by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1998, have confirmed the presence of prehistoric human settlements in the area, with evidence of continuous habitation from the Old Stone Age to the Neolithic period.
Debjharan: Odisha's Emerging Ecotourism Destination
Debjharan, a picturesque waterfall located about 30 kilometres from Sambalpur, has also been granted tourist destination status.
The site is set to be developed into an ecotourism hotspot, with the state allocating an estimated 94 lakh rupees for its development. Plans include the creation of boating facilities at the Debjharan Reservoir, a nature trail leading to the waterfall, a floating jetty, visitor amenities, and a watch tower.
The waterfall is already a popular picnicking site, attracting thousands of tourists annually, especially from November to January. The development of Debjharan as an ecotourism site is expected to boost the local economy and provide visitors with a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure activities.
Cultural Significance and Conservation Efforts
Both Bhima Mandali and Debjharan hold significant cultural and historical value for Odisha. Bhima Mandali, with its prehistoric rock art and mythological associations, offers a glimpse into the region's ancient past. However, it faces challenges due to lack of infrastructure and conservation efforts.
Debjharan, on the other hand, represents Odisha's commitment to sustainable tourism development. The ecotourism project at Debjharan aims to balance environmental conservation with tourism promotion, potentially serving as a model for similar initiatives across the state.
