Odia film industry heading towards coma, needs revival: BJP MLA Akash Das Nayak

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

BJP MLA Akash Das Nayak urges revival of Odia film industry, facing decline with only 60 cinema halls left. Proposes multipurpose cinemas and subsidies for Odia films. Previous government had brought a film policy and it completely became meaningless as not a single film could benefit from that policy, he alleged.

Odia film industry is experiencing significant difficulties as the number of operational cinema halls in Odisha has reduced to only 60. Notably, the vibrant tourist destination of Puri does not possess a single cinema hall. This issue was highlighted during an Assembly session by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Akash Das Nayak on Thursday.

MLA Das Nayak has called on the government to construct multipurpose cinema halls in every block, a move he believes could revitalise the local film industry. He also proposed that Odia films, particularly those focusing on stories about great personalities of Odisha should be granted subsidies. This measure, he argues, would enhance the economic standings of those working in the industry, from artists to technicians.

“The number of cinema halls is reducing in Odisha day by day. Hence, I have requested the Government to see how multipurpose cinema halls can be built at block levels. At least we can provide government training including skill development. The halls ideally can have market complexes where women self-help groups (WSHGs) will be able to sell their products,” the BJP leader expressed.

“Hundreds of artistes and technicians are associated with the Odia film industry. Moreover, directly or indirectly, many families are dependent on and earn their living from the film industry. The previous government had brought a film policy and it completely became meaningless as not a single film could benefit from that policy,” Akash Das Nayak said.

“It is likely that an ideal film policy will come up soon,” the BJP legislator hoped.
