Rajya Sabha
A formal notification was issued on Tuesday regarding the upcoming by-election to six Rajya Sabha seats including one from Odisha.
There are six casual vacancies in the Council of States from four states following the resignation of members from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Haryana. The one seat from Odisha is vacant following the resignation of BJD leader Sujeet Kumar who later joined the BJP. Kumar had tendered his resignation from the Upper House in September.
Senior journalist Akshay Sahoo said that there is every possibility that the BJP might re-nominate Kumar to the Upper House.
“When Rajya Sabha election comes, names of several candidates do round. But there has been pattern seen in BJP where the party is trying to weaken the BJD. Rajya Sabha members are being made to resign are they are joining the BJP and being sent to the Upper House. There is 99 percent possibility that Sujeet Kumar will be nominated to Rajya Sabha by the BJP. If doesn’t happen, he might be appointed for the Western Odisha Development Council,” said Sahoo.
