New ration cards: Odisha extends e-KYC update deadline amid connectivity challenges

In a major relief to the people in remote areas facing network connectivity challenges, the Odisha government on Saturday extended the deadline for updating Electronic Know Your Customer (E-KYC) by the ration card holders in the state. Earlier, the state government had informed that there would be no extension of the eKYC process after the expiry of the previous deadline on February 15.

Informing the development, the Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Department Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra stated that the deadline for eKYC verification has been extended till March 31, 2025.

The decision has been taken to address these technological barriers and the difficulties faced by people. Efforts are underway to enhance the connectivity infrastructure with network devices set to be deployed at 341 locations throughout Odisha.

The need for this extension is underscored by persistent connectivity issues. Reports suggest 111 locations continue to grapple with slow network speeds, affecting residents' ability to update their E-KYC information. Furthermore, a pressing concern is the complete absence of network connectivity in 230 locations which are mostly PDS centres, posing substantial hurdles to digital processes.

The state's initiative to improve infrastructure is expected to ease E-KYC service access, especially for residents in these significantly impacted areas.
