Odisha to boost air connectivity from New Year. Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar airports to start direct flights. CM Mohan Majhi hails milestone.

New flights to and from Odisha starting from 2025 New Year

Odisha is set to enhance its air connectivity with the operation of new flight routes from New Year. From January 1, Jharsuguda will have direct flights to Hyderabad, Raipur, Lucknow, and Mumbai. Meanwhile, Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar will also commence direct flights to Indore, Dehradun, Kochi, Jaipur, and Lucknow starting January 3, 2025.

The above announcement was made by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, who also described it as a substantial milestone for Odisha’s economic advancement, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

However, Odisha will see a host of new services and facilities in the New Year 2025 with improved flight connectivity, more planes, and even incentives for airways.

In December 2024, IndiaOne Air commenced two daily flight services between Jeypore and Bhubaneswar to meet increased passenger demand, with planes departing from Bhubaneswar at 6.55 am and 10.55 am and the same departing from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar from 8.55 am and 3.15 pm, respectively.

Besides, the tribal-dominated district of Malkangiri is also expected to receive direct flight services from Visakhapatnam International Airport in 2025. This will also enhance connectivity in the region.

Seeking the development of airports and related infrastructure development, a delegation of Odisha MPs met Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu on December 19.

Various infrastructure improvements under the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016 and the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme were sought and a memorandum calling for the construction of a new terminal at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar was submitted. 

Additionally, the delegation suggested the second-phase development of Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda, the establishment of a new airport in Puri, and the transformation of the Charbatia airstrip in Cuttack into a full-fledged airport.

Apart from this, the Aviation Ministry was also urged to include Birasal in Dhenkanal, Hirakud in Sambalpur, Rangailunda in Ganjam, Paradip in Jagatsinghpur, Utkela in Kalahandi, Kalinganagar in Jajpur, Raisuan in Keonjhar, Padampur in Bargarh, Rasgovindpur and Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj districts under the UDAN scheme.
