In the wake of the death of another Nepali student in KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has pledged its readiness to reinvestigate the safety of students if necessary.
NHRC member Priyank Kanungo asserted that the well-being of students remains their top priority and opened up on the commission’s readiness to probe the repeated death incidents. He emphasised that if deemed necessary, another team will be dispatched to conduct an inquiry into student safety.
“We have sent a notice to the DGP and Chief Secretary demanding an Action Taken Report (ATR). If needed, a team from NHRC will come to Bhubaneswar to investigate the matter. Our top priority is the safety of students,” Kanungo informed.
Meanwhile, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), urging them to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter. The commission has mandated that the investigation be concluded and a detailed report, including the actions undertaken, be submitted by the 9th of this month.
“A Nepali student was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the hostel of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, marking the second such incident at the University within three months. The complainant alleged that this issue has raised serious concerns about the safety of foreign students. The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be serious violations of the human rights of the victim,” the NHRC letter read.
“The allegations made in the complaint be investigated and taken proper action including lodging of FIR as provisions of BNS and other relevant laws. The authorities are directed to submit an Action Taken Report along with the copy of FIR and PM report by 09.05.2025 for perusal of the Commission,” the letter added.
Earlier, the NHRC had dispatched a team to investigate the tragic demise of another Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, holding the KIIT administration accountable for extreme negligence in handling the situation.
