Nepali student death at KIIT University: NHRC begins probe

An official team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commenced an investigation into the death of a Nepali girl student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

As per sources, the investigation aims to explore allegations surrounding the circumstances leading to the student's demise, alongside claims of harassment directed at other students.

Priyank Kanungo, a member of the NHRC, had previously informed about the inquiry.

Rising Concerns Prompt Investigation

As per reports, the NHRC became actively involved following serious allegations in connection with the incident at KIIT. To ensure a comprehensive investigation, the commission has directed the Director General of Investigations and the Law Registrar for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Investigation Team

The investigative team, led by a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)-ranked officer, includes three members. 

A two-member team is on-site at the university and is expected to submit their detailed findings by March 10.

NHRC members have stated that they will continue their work until the investigation is complete, strictly following the commission’s directives. 

The KIIT incident has drawn widespread criticism, bringing Odisha into the global spotlight for the wrong reasons. As a result, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had to issue an apology regarding the situation.

NHRC Invites Information on KIIT Controversy

Meanwhile, NHRC has extended an invitation to the public to submit any pertinent information regarding the controversy at the KIIT university. This follows after the NHRC's acknowledgment of the reported incident involving the death of a Nepali student.

Priyank Kanungo, a member of the NHRC, made the statement through OTV, encouraging individuals to provide details that could aid in the ongoing investigation. The NHRC emphasised the importance of contributions from KIIT students as well as the general public, which could prove pivotal in understanding the circumstances surrounding recent events involving students from Nepal.

"Any information provided will be thoroughly valued and investigated. Interested parties are encouraged to approach the NHRC investigation team, as the body works towards a deadline on March 10 to compile and report their findings. We urge everyone with relevant information to come forward. Your cooperation can significantly aid our efforts to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation," said Kanungo.

Marathon Questioning

As per reports, the NHRC team undertook marathon questioning for around five hours starting from 2 pm to 7 pm at the KIIT University on Thursday. The team also questioned the victim’s hostel mates.

Special Cell Formed

In response to recent concerns over student safety at the KIIT University, the Higher Education Department has announced the formation of a special International Student Facilitation Cell. This initiative seeks to enhance the educational experience for foreign students attending both state and private universities.

A helpline service has been activated for the foreign students seeking assistance, available at the numbers 0674-2323403 and 0674-2323404.
