Nandan Kanan Express train en route to Odisha splits into two
A major train accident was narrowly avoided near Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Uttar Pradesh when the Nandan Kanan Express (train number 12876) suddenly split into two parts shortly after departure on Monday night. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
The train, travelling from Anand Vihar in Delhi to Puri, was already running over three hours late. At approximately 9:30 pm last night, as the train slowly gained speed from platform number 1 of DDU Junction, the coupling of the S4 sleeper coach broke down.
However, just six kilometres from the station, the train split into two sections, with the front section, including the engine and six coaches, moving approximately 200 meters forward before stopping. Meanwhile, the rear section, comprising 15 coaches, including AC coaches and the guard’s van, was left behind on the track.

Railway officials quickly responded to the situation, bringing the detached sections back to platforms 7 and 8 of DDU Junction. Passengers reported sudden jolts and chaos as the coaches disconnected. Many feared a derailment, but officials swiftly intervened.
Authorities rerouted both sections back to DDU Junction, parking them on platforms 7 and 8. Engineers inspected the damaged S4 coach, declared it unfit, and shifted passengers to other compartments.
