A mob went berserk and attacked a youth over a Facebook comment, leaving him critically injured at Kantapada village under Kodala police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The youth was first admitted to the local hospital. He was then shifted to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital after his condition worsened. His condition remains critical during the filing of this report.
According to sources, Ratnakar Khatua had made some comments on Facebook, leading to unrest in the village. Locals expressed outrage over the FB comment and attacked Ratnakar.
However, he managed to escape and alerted the cops who rushed to the village and rescued him. He was being taken to the police station when the mob dragged him out of the police van and brutally beat him up, leaving him critically injured.
Cops had to beg intellectuals and elderly persons of the village to intervene and rescue Ratnakar from the mob. However, the mob went unruly and beat up Ratnakar before he was finally rescued.
Based on a complaint by Ratnakar, police registered a case against 12 people under section 534/2024. However, no one has been arrested yet in this connection.
The incident has spread outrage in the area.
