Minor girl impregnated after promise of marriage in Odisha; accused detained

A distressing case surfaced on Wednesday from Sundargarh district, where a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth under the guise of a love affair and promise of marriage. Police have detained the accused and initiated a detailed investigation.

According to official sources, shame and shock returned to Sundargarh district as a disturbing case of sexual exploitation has emerged from Hatibari police limits. The minor girl has accused a young man from the same locality of rape.

The youth first entered into a romantic relationship with the girl. Over time, he convinced her of his intention to marry her and established a physical relationship. However, after the girl became pregnant, he allegedly began harassing her and refused to go through with the marriage.

Following the ordeal, the victim’s family lodged a complaint at Hatibari Police Station. The police have detained the accused and are currently interrogating him. Further legal steps will follow after the investigation concludes.

“She had a love affair with Manoj Kandulna. The youth established a physical relationship with her multiple times on the pretext of marriage. Subsequently, the minor girl became pregnant due to the youth. We have detained the accused at the police station, and a detailed probe is underway,” Hatibari Police Station IIC, Surendra Kumar Nayak, said.

“A medical examination of the victim will be carried out, and she will be produced before the CWC (Child Welfare Committee). The statement of the minor girl will be recorded in court under Section 164. Medical examination of the accused will also be conducted. The statements of both will be sent to the Forensic Lab for analysis and comparison,” the cop stated.
