A man allegedly shot his elder sister dead at Samagiri village under Pandapada police limits in Keonjhar district on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Malati Barik and the accused as her brother Prasanna Barik.

According to a source, Prasanna worked as a gunman with a company. He had a licensed gun with him. His elder sister Malati, who was unmarried, was staying with his family.

Every month, he would divide his salary between his wife and Malati.

For some days, Prasanna was not keeping well. Today he asked his wife and elder sister for some money for his treatment.

His wife, who was away at her parents’ house, asked him to take the money from his sister. When he approached his sister, she asked him to take it from his wife.

At this, he lost his cool and opened fire at his sister with his licensed gun. Hearing the commotion, neighbours came to her rescue and rushed her to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where the doctors declared her received dead.

Back in the village, on being informed, a team from Pandapada police station reached the village, seized the weapon used in the crime and took Prasanna to the police station.

“Every month, he would divide his salary between his wife and sister. Today when he asked his sister and wife for some money for his treatment, both refused. At this he got angry and shot his sister dead,” said Arjun Parida, a relative.

The police have launched a detailed investigation.
