A man was convicted of murder by the Additional District Magistrate of Nabarangpur after his son testified against him in the court.

The accused Naveen Amantya had allegedly killed his mother for money in March 2022 at Darubandhasahi near Nabarangpur town to which, his son, Raja Amantya was an eye witness.

Following the murder, the police arrested Naveen and launched a probe in this connection. Naveen was forwarded to the court and the case was heard. Raja was made the prime witness in the case.

The district judge handed Naveen a 10-year jail term and Rs 5000 fine after hearing the case and recording Raja’s testimony against his father, Naveen.

Speaking about the incident, Raja said, “We were residing in a thatched house in our village. My father used to consume alcohol and beat my grandmother for money. One day when I returned home, I saw my father beating her in an inebriated condition. He had beaten her so hard that she had fallen unconscious on the floor.”

“I went outside to call an ambulance but it was too late. My grandmother was already dead by the time I brought help,” said Raja.

“The court has sent the accused to jail for 10 years after the testimony of his son. He has also been asked to pay Rs 5000 fine. He will have to stay in jail for another six months if he fails to pay the fine,” said, Additional Public Prosecutor, Santosh Kumar Mishra.
